Only four of the 15 Heads of State are expected to attend the SADC Extraordinary Summit, which will be chaired by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Harare on Wednesday.
The attendees include Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, and Madagascar’s incoming SADC chair, Andry Nirina Rajoelina. Also attending is Botswana’s newly elected President, Duma Gideon Boko, marking his first SADC summit since assuming office on October 30.
Other notable figures attending include South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile, Eswatini Prime Minister Russel Mmiso Dlamini, Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, Angolan Minister of Defence Joao Ernesto Santos, and Seychelles’ Minister of Internal Affairs Charles Errol Fonseka.
The SADC Council of Ministers met on Monday, followed by the Ministerial Committee of the Organ Troika on Tuesday, in preparation for the summit.
The SADC Secretariat announced that the summit will focus on reviewing the security situation in the region, particularly in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The SADC region deployed SAMIDRC in December 2023 for a one-year mandate to address the security concerns in the DRC and restore stability for sustainable development.
The Extraordinary Summit will be preceded by a meeting of the SADC Organ Troika Summit, chaired by Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar, on behalf of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
