Four Arrested in Mutoko for Vandalizing ZETDC Transformers and Stealing Cables

Four men were detained in Mutoko, Mashonaland East, this week for allegedly damaging transformers and stealing armored cables from the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) at Mushimbo and Rukau Business Centres.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the arrests via their official social media page, stating that the suspects were captured at a roadblock on the Harare-Nyamapanda Road on Monday. Police shared the following details:

“Police in Mutoko, acting on intelligence, apprehended Anderson Takawira, also known as Tatenda Vambe (30), Isaac Vheremu (38), Trymore Bona (30), and Archford Chiyangwa (25) at a roadblock on January 27, 2025. The men are being investigated for their involvement in the vandalism of a ZETDC transformer and the theft of armored cables.”

“Their arrest resulted in the recovery of several items, including their getaway vehicle, a Toyota Aqua (AGF 9536), along with bolts, nuts, two scales, spanners, a knife, and stolen armored cables.”

“The suspects are also linked to the theft of transformer oil at Mushimbo Business Centre and the theft of copper cables at Rukau Business Centre, both occurring on January 27, 2025, following transformer damage.”

In a separate incident, Caleb Chivhanga, 25, from Chinhoyi, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for possessing 0.85g of copper without a license, violating the Copper Control Act [Chapter 14:06]. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) reported that Chivhanga was caught with bundled copper wire on January 1, 2025, in Musakwa Village, Chinhoyi.
