Four Perish Following KZN Floods

While attempting to cross a river in KwaZulu Natal, three persons were confirmed dead and one is still missing after being swept away by floodwaters.

Tuesday’s flash floods in the province resulted in 13 injuries, with Inanda township suffering the worst. The news was verified this morning by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).

According to spokesperson Nonala Ndlovu, four confirmed fatalities have occurred thus far. “Three fatalities and one missing person have been recorded in the eThekwini Metro.

Four injuries and one fatality were also recorded in the Ugu District Municipality, according to Ndlovu.

Preliminary investigations, Ndlovu said, show significant damage to houses, sewage systems, electrical, and road infrastructure.

Numerous homes experienced floods, wall collapse, and roof damage. In Durban, 110 homes suffered partial damage, while 70 homes were entirely demolished.

“This has touched 552 people overall, leaving 151 people homeless. 29 persons were affected by one entirely demolished house and three partially damaged homes in the Ugu District Municipality, according to Ndlovu.

Phoenix, Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu, Pinetown, and the neighboring villages, all in the north of Durban, are among the regions devastated by the torrential rains and violent winds.

Social Development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza said he will be providing will Social Relief of Distress to the victims today in Inanda. The victims were profiled by social workers when Premier, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, went to assess damage in the area.

Khoza said the department had the responsibility to ensure that families who have been affected are receiving adequate support and assistance in the form of Social Relief of Distress.
