Gardener Confesses to Stealing US$70k

A gardener from Greendale allegedly stole US$70 000 from his employer and confessed 11 months later after spending almost half of the money, a Harare magistrate heard yesterday.

Collin Mubvumbi (43) appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Sharon Rakafa, facing theft charges. He was remanded in custody to today for bail application.

Mr Chakanyuka Nyatanga employed Mubvumbi as a gardener from 2013 until September last year and during this time Mubvumbi had lawful access to Mr Nyatanga’s house.

In November 2023, Mr Nyatanga left US$70 000 hidden inside a fitted wardrobe under a board.

The State, led by prosecutor Mr Takudzwa Mutyavaviri, alleged that Mubvumbi noticed Mr Nyatanga hiding the cash under the wardrobe. When Mr Nyatanga and his family left the house, Mubvumbi reportedly entered the bedroom, unscrewed part of the fitted wardrobe, and stole the money.

But several months later, Mubvumbi confessed to his employer that he had stolen the money. He handed over US$32 800 as what he still had left. He had used part of the stolen money to buy two residential stands in Phase 17, Eastview, Goromonzi.
