Glen View Residents Celebrate Solar Energy Revolution Under Presidential Initiative

Harare, Zimbabwe | The Glen View community is abuzz with activity as a pioneering solar power initiative under President Mnangagwa’s leadership takes shape.

More than half of the 400 homes targeted for the project now have solar panels installed, marking significant progress in the effort to harness renewable energy.

The project was inspected by Special Advisor to the President on Government Programmes, Dr. Joram Gumbo, alongside Harare Metropolitan Province Minister Charles Tawengwa. They were joined by Dr. Paul Tungwarara, the Presidential Investment Advisor and spearhead of the project under the Zimbabwe Solar Energy Company (ZISEC), a subsidiary of Prevail Group International (PGI).

This initiative, which involves installing solar panels on household rooftops at no cost to homeowners, is a groundbreaking move toward sustainable energy.

The energy generated is supplied directly to the national grid, helping alleviate the country’s power shortages. In exchange, participating households enjoy uninterrupted electricity and receive a modest financial incentive.

Speaking on the project’s impact, Dr. Gumbo expressed optimism. “The Glen View Solar Power Project demonstrates the transformative potential of renewable energy. It’s a step toward addressing energy deficits while promoting environmental and economic sustainability,” he said.

Dr. Gumbo emphasized the urgency of transitioning to clean energy. He noted that with the increasing pressures of climate change and resource depletion, such projects are essential. “This initiative reflects our commitment to innovation, energy independence, and alignment with global sustainability goals,” he added.

Harnessing Zimbabwe’s abundant sunlight is key to achieving energy security, he explained, urging the expansion of solar initiatives to local communities. Community solar projects, he said, could empower citizens while reducing dependence on the national grid.

Dr. Tungwarara, the visionary behind the project, highlighted the practical benefits of the scheme. “We devised the concept of renting rooftops for solar panels as a solution to load-shedding. The pilot phase, covering 400 houses, is already generating electricity, with more than 200 homes operational,” he said.

The full installation is expected to produce 2 megawatts of power by next year.

Minister Charles Tawengwa echoed these sentiments, saying the project ensures Glen View residents enjoy uninterrupted power supply. “This initiative means even during load-shedding, participating homes will have electricity. Residents also benefit financially through roof rental payments,” he said.

Beneficiaries of the project have lauded its positive impact. Mrs. Earlene Gideon, a homeowner, shared her experience. “Since the installation, I haven’t faced load-shedding. I can now iron, cook, and watch television without disruptions,” she said.

Mrs. Phoebe Ziwange, a long-time resident, noted the relief from power outages. “Before this project, power cuts were a daily struggle. Now, storing food and managing household tasks has become easier,” she said.

Another beneficiary, Mrs. Manyara Dhlakama, highlighted the broader benefits. “This initiative has transformed our community. It not only provides reliable power but also improves security with better lighting,” she said, praising the President’s commitment to improving lives.
