Government Assures Medical Support for Beitbridge Crash Victims

Dr. Evelyn Ndlovu, the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution in Matabeleland South, affirmed that government support would be extended to the victims of the Beitbridge road accident to cover medical expenses. She also stated that assistance would be provided to the families of the deceased for funeral arrangements. Minister Ndlovu visited Beitbridge District Hospital to assess the condition of the injured individuals.

The accident, which occurred along the Beitbridge-Masvingo road near Tshamunanga area, resulted in nine fatalities and several injuries when two buses collided head-on. Minister Ndlovu, accompanied by the local Civil Protection Committee led by Mrs. Sikhangezile Mafu-Moyo, visited the accident site to gather accurate information on the incident.

According to reports, the accident transpired around 1 am after a City Bus hit a donkey, veered into the right lane, and collided with another bus, causing seven immediate fatalities. Two additional individuals succumbed to their injuries upon admission to Beitbridge District Hospital, while eight critically injured passengers were transferred to United Bulawayo Hospitals for further treatment.

Expressing condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery, Minister Dr. Evelyn Ndlovu assured that the government would cover burial expenses for the deceased and provide financial assistance for medical treatment and care to the injured.

Minister Ndlovu emphasized the importance of communities securing their domestic animals, particularly at night, to prevent similar accidents involving animals on highways. She urged public transport operators to ensure full insurance coverage for passengers to address post-accident challenges.

Beitbridge District Medical Officer, Dr. Lenos Samhere, reported that 41 patients were received at the hospital, with two fatalities upon arrival.
