GZU Student Takes Own Life After Discovering That Her Boyfriend Is a Married Man

A Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) student, Lillian Rusike, tragically ended her life on Wednesday after discovering that her boyfriend, whom she believed would become her husband, was already married.

Lillian, just 22 years old, was described by those who knew her as a deeply religious and God-fearing young woman. She was completing her work attachment at Masvingo Rural District Council and was an active member of the Roman Catholic Church at St. Theresa Rujeko.

Her close friend, Mitchell Gumbo, shared fond memories of Lillian’s unwavering faith and dedication to her church.

“Lillian lived by her faith,” Mitchell said. “She was deeply involved in church activities, including the praise and worship team, and attended services every Sunday without fail. She was a member of muchoir yeMasvingo and participated in various prayer programs. Her commitment to God was truly inspiring.”

Lillian’s relationship with her boyfriend, Farai, was a significant part of her life.

“She truly loved him,” Mitchell explained. “Farai was her first love, and because of her religious beliefs, she saw him as her future husband. They had been together for almost a year, and he had even made plans to introduce her to his family. She believed they would build a future together after she finished her studies.”

However, Lillian’s world came crashing down when she discovered that Farai was married and had two children.

“This revelation shattered her,” Mitchell said. “It went against everything she stood for and left her feeling betrayed. To make matters worse, Farai’s wife reportedly confronted Lillian at her workplace, which added to her distress. When she confronted Farai about his marriage, he admitted it and even suggested making her his second wife. She couldn’t accept this.”

Mitchell recounted the painful moment she learned of her friend’s death.

“I woke up to calls and WhatsApp updates sharing the heartbreaking news,” she said. “Lillian was found by her aunt after she had taken her own life. She didn’t leave a note, but it’s clear she felt her world had fallen apart. She had so much potential and a bright future ahead of her.”

Lillian was laid to rest at Mhandamabwe Business Centre in Chivhu after a church service held at her aunt’s home in Mucheke, where she grew up.

Her tragic death has left her family, friends, and church community in deep mourning.
