A Harare man, Pritchard Tafadzwa Paradzayi, has enlisted legal counsel to push for an investigation into Chief Nyamaropa (real name Munyaradze Tivange) for allegedly infringing on the rights of his subjects to dignity.
Paradzayi, in a formal letter, is seeking the intervention of the president of the National Council of Chiefs regarding the chief’s behavior. This follows a viral video showing Chief Nyamaropa insulting a woman during a court session, where he ordered her to remove her glasses and called her “stupid.”
The letter, dated November 27 and issued by Paradzayi’s lawyer, Obey Shava of Shava Law Chambers, requests that Chief Nyamaropa’s actions be reviewed by the council. The letter stresses that the conduct displayed in the video, which was widely shared on social media, shows a disrespectful attitude towards women and undermines the dignity of his subjects.
Paradzayi’s legal team argues that Chief Nyamaropa’s actions violate the constitutional rights of the woman involved, including the right to dignity under Section 51 and the right to a fair hearing under Section 69 of Zimbabwe’s Constitution.
The complaint has also been sent to the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, with the legal team demanding that the issue be addressed within 10 days or face legal action.
