The investigative journalism team behind Dug Up, known for exposing high-profile scandals, is living in fear after the mysterious death of one of its members, Watson Flexy Munyaka.
Munyaka was reportedly abducted and later thrown from a moving vehicle on Monday.
His colleague, Maynard Manyowa, revealed that none of Munyaka’s valuables appeared to have been stolen, reinforcing suspicions that his killing was a targeted attack.
“Good evening, everyone. My brother, Watson Flexy Munyaka, has sadly passed away. He was not just a colleague but also family. He played a vital role in our work at Dug Up and was a key part of Khuluma Afrika as well.”
“Watson was murdered, and his body was dumped in Marondera this afternoon. Hospital staff reported that no expensive gadgets or money were taken from him, leading us to believe he was targeted because of his work with us. This is a devastating loss.”
Manyowa emphasized Munyaka’s crucial role in the investigative team, describing him as a skilled researcher and an essential presence in their work in Zimbabwe.
“Watson was one of the pillars of our investigations. He was our eyes and ears on the ground, a highly experienced researcher who knew how to dig deep. I have lost a brother, a friend, and a key figure behind the scenes.”
He also expressed growing concerns for the safety of the Dug Up team in light of Munyaka’s death.
“We probably know as much as you do at this point. Until a post-mortem is conducted and the police release their findings, we can only rely on the information given by hospital staff.”
“We can only hope the police act quickly to provide answers. Unfortunately, given the nature of Watson’s recent work, we can’t help but feel both suspicious and deeply fearful.”
