Harare, Zimbabwe | Prominent journalist and HSTV host Blessed Mhlanga has once again been summoned by the police, raising concerns over media freedom and the safety of journalists in Zimbabwe.
In a statement shared on social media, Mhlanga revealed that three armed individuals, carrying pistols, visited his office on Monday morning looking for him. However, they did not disclose the reason for their visit. Shortly after, he received a call instructing him to report to the Law and Order division.
“It’s not a laughing matter at all. Three persons armed with pistols came to my office this morning looking for me. They did not say why they needed me. Then minutes later, I got a call inviting me to Law and Order. I will be presenting myself to the police with my lawyers tomorrow,” Mhlanga stated.
The latest development comes amid growing concerns about the shrinking space for independent journalism in Zimbabwe. Mhlanga, known for his hard-hitting political coverage and investigative reporting, has previously been targeted by authorities.
While it remains unclear what charges or allegations he faces, the journalist’s summoning adds to a trend where media professionals and activists find themselves under increased scrutiny.
Zimbabwe’s media environment has remained tense, with journalists frequently facing intimidation, arrests, and legal threats.
Mhlanga’s decision to attend the meeting with legal representation highlights the gravity of the situation. His summoning has already sparked reactions from media rights groups and the public, with many calling for transparency and the protection of press freedom.
