Junior Police Officers Make Uniform Protest at Independence Parade

Junior Police Officers Make Uniform Protest at Independence Parade

Junior police officers have staged a premeditated protest to express their displeasure over the growing lack of uniforms within the force by taking a stance and showing up to this year’s inspection parades for the independence festivities in mismatched attire.

According to reports, junior officers wearing inappropriate clothing forced police commanders in Harare to call off an inspection parade ahead of Thursday’s independence festivities. A scarcity of new shoes for over three years was evident when some officers showed up for the parade wearing civilian shoes.

The extent of the police force’s uniform deficit was brought to light during the planning of Harare’s provincial independence anniversary parade. The scope of the problem was revealed by the police detachment, even though other security branch personnel looked well-groomed.

Senior officers were reportedly disappointed by this and chose not to check the police detachment after seeing how they were dressed. According to a senior police official, personnel have been hiding uniform shortages for a while, making do with what they have and borrowing clothes for special occasions. But the recent demonstration, in which police turned up dressed as themselves, suggests a change in strategy.

Lack of uniforms forced the postponement of the 2023 recruit pass-out parade last year. The pass-out ceremony has since taken place, and the recruits have been assigned to their various posts.

Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national police spokesperson, gave the assurance that the shortfall of uniforms is being addressed gradually and that most provinces should have their shortages rectified shortly.

Junior officers, on the other hand, charge that their superiors are being negligent, pointing out that working conditions are getting worse while senior officials get large pay and benefits.
