Harare | THE murder of a Rwandese national last Friday in Harare, Zimbabwe, left the community in terror, with indications that the man, Samuel Habimana (49), was assassinated by agents of Paul Kagame’s regime.
In just a few minutes after Habimana returned home from work around 10 pm, gunmen broke into his house, stormed into the kitchen, and shot him in the neck, killing him instantly.
He was murdered in front of his son, wife, and house help at 2071 Mainway Meadows.
It is understood that the house help was the first to spot four men waiting for Habimana. He alerted the family who took protective measures and raised an alarm, but the assailants, wearing face masks, broke the door with a claw bar and murdered him.
A report was made to the police and investigations are ongoing.
As of writing, no statement had been released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
However, a former Rwandan refugee in Zimbabwe, Ansbert Nkundineza, and one of the leading opposition figures in exile said that the matter was a terror incident linked to Kigali where President Paul Kagame’s regime has been targeting opponents abroad for elimination, stoking diplomatic fallout with countries such as South Africa.
“We have been receiving information about distressed Rwandan refugees for a while now, most are fearful of their own lives and those of loved ones from Rwandan operatives currently roaming the streets of Harare at large. We call upon the government of Zimbabwe to ensure the safety of Rwandan refugees as enshrined in the Geneva Convention.”
“Equally, we call upon the international community and the UNHCR to ensure all refugees who are at high risk are assessed and resettled to safer countries. We call upon the government of Rwanda to cease its transnational repressive activities including the invasion of DRC and initiate dialogue with its critics as the only feasible way to settle political differences,” said Nkundineza.

He said what is suspicious is that the alleged robbers did not take anything from the house where he had some US$3000, but only took away a CCTV recording device.
The late Habimana operated a transport business and had just opened a grocery shop in Harare.
Rwandan refugees have been in Zimbabwe for over 30 years, and the community is estimated to comprise of over 2000 families.
