US Vice President Kamala Harris recently expressed her readiness to use a firearm if someone breaks into her home, joking, “If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot,” during a livestreamed event with Oprah Winfrey in Michigan.
While discussing her gun ownership, Harris emphasized her support for banning assault weapons, describing them as “tools of war” that shouldn’t be on the streets. She noted that her stance on guns has drawn scrutiny from opponents, especially as she has shifted her views leading up to the November election.
During the event, Harris reaffirmed her commitment to the Second Amendment but called for stricter gun laws, citing the issue of school shootings. She described it as “bone-chilling” for children to have to practice for such emergencies, referencing a recent tragic school shooting in Georgia.

Harris’s gun ownership has been known since 2019, and she has stated that she owns a gun for personal safety, having worked as a prosecutor. She addressed Trump’s claims that she would confiscate guns, clarifying that both she and her running mate, Tim Walz, are gun owners.
Harris outlined her plans for gun safety measures, including an assault weapons ban, universal background checks, and red-flag laws, which allow for the temporary removal of firearms from individuals deemed dangerous. The livestream event attracted about 300,000 viewers and covered various topics, including immigration and the economy.
