Kariba Dam Water Levels Continue to Drop, Now at Just 3.7% Usable Storage

Kariba Dam Wall Almost Done
Water levels at the Kariba Dam continue to decline despite some rainfall in the reservoir and its surrounding catchment area. According to the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), the lake’s current level, as of November 18, 2024, stands at 476.03 meters, representing only 3.71% of usable storage.

This marks a noticeable drop compared to the same period last year, when the water level was at 477.68 meters, with 15.15% of usable storage. ZRA explained that the Kariba Lake is meant to operate between 475.50m and 488.50m to sustain hydropower generation. However, fluctuating levels have been observed due to rainfall patterns in the lake and its catchment area, with the current level showing a continued decline.

In a related development, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Energy and Power Development, Edgar Moyo, informed Parliament that the country’s power utility, ZESA Holdings, is now generating only 100 megawatts from the Kariba South Power Station, which has an installed capacity of 1,050 MW. Moyo explained that at one point, the station was producing up to 300 megawatts, but due to reduced water levels, the output has dropped significantly.

He also noted that Zimbabwe had been allocated 8.4 billion cubic meters of water for the year to generate electricity, but the demand for power had previously led to higher usage of water from the dam. As a result, the remaining water resources are now only sufficient to generate 100 megawatts for the rest of the year.
