Kombi Driver Jailed 18 Months For Killing Pedestrian

Takudzwa Chipere, a commuter omnibus driver from Murisa Village in Chitungwiza, was sentenced to eighteen months in prison following a terrible occurrence. Judge Ntombizodwa Sibanda of Harare convicted 26-year-old Chipere guilty of driving recklessly and killing a pedestrian.

Takudzwa Chipere was given a two-year jail sentence by the court, with six months suspended if he behaves well after his release. His driver’s licence for public transportation was also suspended, and he was prohibited from operating a car for a period of two years.

Prosecutor Ms. Charlotte Gomani stated that Chipere was transporting 14 passengers in a Nissan Caravan when the incident happened on April 2. As Chipere turned around to head towards the rail-over-road portion of Seke Road, he tragically ran into pedestrian Mike Moyo.

Before Takudzwa Chipere stopped, Moyo was being pulled beneath the car for almost a metre while he was crossing the street. Moyo was pulled from under the car by emergency personnel, and he was sent to Parirenyatwa Hospital right away for care.

Four days later, Moyo passed away from his wounds in spite of medical intervention. The court’s ruling highlights the seriousness of the infraction and serves as a warning about the repercussions of careless driving on public roadways.
