Kudakwashe Tagwirei Makes History with Global Award of Excellence

Sakunda Holdings CEO, Kudakwashe Tagwirei, has made history as the first black recipient of the prestigious Global Award of Excellence, conferred by the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA).

The award was presented to him over the weekend at Solusi University.

The Maryland-based SDA General Conference emphasized that this recognition aims to inspire Adventists worldwide to support church institutions. The Global Award of Excellence is the highest honor within the SDA Church, given to individuals who have made a significant global impact on education within the church community.

Tagwirei earned this recognition due to his outstanding contributions through his Bridging the Gap Foundation (BGF), which has transformed 63 Adventist schools across Zimbabwe by providing farming equipment, infrastructure development, and other essential resources.

At Solusi University alone, projects worth approximately US$7 million are underway, aimed at fostering self-sustainability. The university’s vice-chancellor, Khumbulani Mpofu, acknowledged the visible impact of Tagwirei’s initiatives, particularly in the installation of a comprehensive irrigation system at Mananda Farm. This system includes electrical and pump plants, conveyance systems, fencing, and telemetry control.

Lisa Hardy, SDA General Conference’s Education Director, highlighted Tagwirei’s extensive contributions beyond Solusi University. His foundation’s initiatives have benefited numerous primary and secondary schools in Zimbabwe and other institutions, including Bindura University. His work has also had a far-reaching impact on education in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

In his acceptance speech, Tagwirei emphasized the transformative power of education and its role in nation-building. He stated that his efforts were driven by a deep sense of mission rather than a desire for recognition.

“When we commit ourselves to the Lord’s work, we do so out of love, obedience, and a sense of duty, not for accolades,” Tagwirei remarked. “Solusi University is more than just an institution; it stands as a beacon of Adventist education and excellence. Our investment of over US$7 million is a strategic effort to ensure its long-term sustainability and self-sufficiency.”

He concluded by stressing the importance of leadership, vision, and dedication in ensuring that educational institutions not only survive but thrive in the future.
