Harare, Zimbabwe – Dorcas Vambe, widely known as Mai Dhuterere and wife of popular gospel artist Mambo Dhuterere, has been removed from remand in a case where she is accused of defrauding a local politician of US$16,000 in a botched vehicle transaction.
Harare magistrate Mr Tapiwa Banda ruled on Tuesday that the State must proceed by way of summons if it wishes to continue with the prosecution. This decision effectively removes Vambe from routine court appearances until the State is ready to proceed with a full trial.
The charges stem from an incident allegedly involving Vambe and her brother, who are accused of misrepresenting their ability to import a Toyota Hilux GD6 from Botswana on behalf of the complainant.
According to court papers, the incident occurred in September of last year when Vambe became aware that the complainant was in the market for a vehicle and had earmarked US$16,000 for the purchase. It is alleged that she and her brother then approached the complainant, promising to facilitate the purchase and delivery of the vehicle from across the border.
The deal reportedly fell through, and the promised vehicle never materialized, prompting the complainant to file a fraud report with the police.
The case has drawn significant public interest due to Vambe’s association with the gospel music scene through her husband. It remains to be seen whether the State will issue a summons and pursue the matter in court at a later date.
