A serious crash occurred on the N3 highway near the Chatterton offramp in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday morning, involving two trucks and a bakkie.
Emergency response teams from KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service were quick to attend to the scene, where they found nine individuals injured, including one person trapped inside a vehicle. The paramedics, along with Fire and Rescue Services, used specialized equipment to extricate the trapped person while working to stabilize the others.
All the injured individuals were later transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
This incident follows another deadly accident on the N2 near Fairbreeze in Durban on Thursday, November 29. A head-on collision between a bakkie and a truck resulted in two fatalities. The driver and a passenger in the bakkie were confirmed dead at the scene, while a third passenger sustained moderate injuries. The truck driver and passenger suffered only minor injuries.
This tragic series of accidents comes just as eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba launched the city’s Festive Season Management Plan, emphasizing the importance of road safety. Mayor Xaba highlighted law enforcement’s commitment to cracking down on drinking and driving, reckless behavior, and other road offenses through multidisciplinary roadblocks throughout the festive period.
