Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema led a march through Joburg to the Constitutional Court, demanding that President Cyril Ramaphosa be held accountable for his involvement in the Phala Phala scandal. The EFF is challenging Parliament’s decision to forego an impeachment investigation into the matter, which involves a $10 million sum found hidden at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm.
Malema, joined by prominent EFF figures such as Sinawo Tambo, Carl Niehaus, and Nkululeko Dunga, led the protesters wearing the party’s signature red berets and overalls. Chanting struggle songs, they expressed their anger at the president’s alleged corruption and the lack of consequences.
Speaking to the crowd, Malema reiterated that no leader should be above the law, referencing the previous actions taken against former President Jacob Zuma over the Nkandla scandal. He emphasized that every president must be accountable, with Ramaphosa needing to answer for the actions surrounding the 2020 Phala Phala burglary.
The EFF is now pushing for the Constitutional Court to intervene after Parliament rejected an independent panel’s recommendation for Ramaphosa’s impeachment. The party’s legal challenge could potentially reshape the procedures for holding a sitting president accountable, as the Constitutional Court has yet to fully examine the legal grounds for presidential impeachment.
Malema also accused Ramaphosa of corruption, warning that the country’s future could be compromised if such unaccountability is tolerated. The outcome of this case could have significant legal implications, establishing new precedents for presidential accountability in South Africa.
