Man Found Dead, Body Discovered in Shaft
Authorities in the Midlands Province have launched a thorough investigation into a disturbing case of murder following the discovery of a man’s body stashed in a shaft. Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident and issued a public appeal for any information that could assist in the ongoing investigations.
The victim, identified as 47-year-old Nqabutho Mguni from LVD, Mvuma, worked as a security guard. The grim discovery was made on March 11, 2024, around 1500 hours, at a plot located on the outskirts of Mvuma, where illegal mining activities were reportedly taking place.

According to Inspector Mahoko, Mguni was last seen on March 7, 2024, leaving his home around 1720 hours to collect his cell phone from the nearby Nyamafufu area. However, he failed to return home as expected, missing his scheduled guard duty that evening, which was set to begin at 1800 hours.
His colleague, Luckson Mwelasi, who shared accommodation with Mguni, had to work alone that night due to Mguni’s absence. Concerned about Mguni’s disappearance, Mwelasi reported him missing to the Mvuma Police station on March 8, 2024.
The breakthrough in the case came on March 11, 2024, when a passerby stumbled upon Mguni’s lifeless body in a shaft and promptly alerted the authorities. Mining experts were called in to assist in retrieving the body, which exhibited multiple injuries.
Inspector Mahoko emphasized that the case is being treated as a murder, and the police are urging members of the public who may have information about the circumstances leading to Mguni’s death to come forward and assist with the investigation.
The discovery of Mguni’s body has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the dangers associated with illegal mining activities and the need for heightened vigilance and safety measures in such areas.
