A man tragically lost his life in a freak accident on Wednesday morning when a container fell off a truck, crushing his vehicle.
The accident took place at approximately 7:30 a.m. on the N2 near Macassar, close to the Kramat Bridge.
An eyewitness described the chaotic scene, stating that the truck carrying the container had been swerving just before the incident.
“I was driving behind the truck in the slow lane when I saw the large container fall onto the fast lane and crush a mini truck and a red VW Polo before rolling off the road,” the witness explained.
The witness, who stopped to offer help, shared his emotional experience.
“I got out of my car with other drivers, and we rushed to assist. We managed to get one person out, but when we reached the mini truck, it was clear that the driver had already passed away. It was too overwhelming, and I had to leave,” he said.
Kevin Jacobs, a spokesperson for the Cape Town Traffic Service, confirmed that officers were on the scene, which caused the N2 outbound at Kramat Road to be closed at Baden Powell Drive for several hours.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi provided more details, saying: “A delivery vehicle was traveling towards Strand when the container struck the Kramat Bridge, detaching from the truck and causing significant damage and fatalities.”
He further confirmed that the driver of one vehicle, a man, sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. Five others, including three men and two women aged 34 to 37, were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Macassar police have opened a case of culpable homicide and are investigating the incident.
