The government has issued a stern warning to bus and other public service vehicle drivers, emphasising the imperative adherence to prescribed speed limits outlined by law. Failure to comply may result in the cancellation of their licenses.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona conveyed this message during the launch of the 2024 Easter Holiday campaign in Harare. He underscored the alarming global trend where road accidents have become the primary cause of fatalities among young adults aged 25 to 45.
Mhona highlighted Zimbabwe’s grim statistics, revealing that a road traffic accident transpires every 15 minutes, claiming five lives and injuring approximately 38 individuals daily.

In the preceding year alone, 2,089 fatalities were recorded on Zimbabwean roads. Mhona urged a shift in perspective, urging citizens to view these statistics not as mere numbers but as lives tragically lost due to human error or misjudgment.
Expressing urgency for collective action, Minister Felix Mhona stressed the need to reverse this alarming trend, emphasizing that the current trajectory is unsustainable. Deputy Minister Joshua Sacco delivered Mhona’s address, reiterating the profound impact of road accidents on families and the broader economy.
