Mob Assaults Harare LGBTQ Rights Activist Laurence 'Sparrow Rugare' Makoroni

Harare, Zimbabwe | Laurence Sparrow Rugare Makoroni, a prominent LGBTQ rights activist in Harare, was brutally attacked by a mob in Glen Norah.

Known for his advocacy and vocal support for LGBTQ rights, Makoroni was targeted outside a local bar after being denied entry due to his sexual orientation.

The incident unfolded in a harrowing manner. Makoroni, who was with friends at the time, described the attack as a violent confrontation involving approximately ten individuals. While some of his friends managed to escape, Makoroni and two others were left vulnerable. “They made it very clear to us that we were like animals to them,” Makoroni recounted. “They threatened to kill us if we didn’t stop ‘lying’ about our nationality by being gay.”

During the assault, Makoroni suffered injuries to his left hip and abdomen from repeated slaps and kicks. The attackers, reportedly locals, not only physically assaulted him but also issued further threats, insisting he must change his sexual orientation or face even more severe violence in the future.

Following the brutal attack, Makoroni and his companions were taken to Wilkins Hospital, where they received medical attention for their injuries. The assault has drawn significant concern from the LGBTQ community and human rights organizations, highlighting ongoing issues of intolerance and violence.
