Residents of Insiza North are expressing growing frustration with their Member of Parliament, Farai Taruvinga (ZANU PF), due to his extended absence from Parliament. Taruvinga, who was sworn in on September 6, 2023, has not attended any parliamentary sessions since then.
Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com on the condition of anonymity, several villagers have called for his resignation or expulsion, citing concerns over his lack of representation. One villager stated:
“We don’t even know if Taruvinga is still our MP. He’s missed over 100 parliamentary sessions and hasn’t bothered to meet with us to hear our concerns.”
Under Section 129(f) of the Zimbabwean Constitution, an MP who is absent for 21 consecutive sittings without leave may have their seat declared vacant by Parliament, triggering a by-election managed by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
Taruvinga’s absence has been attributed to his ongoing battle with Stage 4 Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Sources close to him report that his health issues, which require regular chemotherapy and hospital visits, have severely impacted his ability to fulfill his parliamentary duties.
