The 120km Murambinda-Birchenough Bridge Road is undergoing significant refurbishment in preparation for this year’s Independence Day main celebrations in Buhera district, Manicaland Province. President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to grace the occasion.
The road’s dilapidated state has been a cause for concern, leading to bus operators avoiding the route altogether. However, Buhera Rural District Council chairperson Thomas Matsenhura has confirmed that rehabilitation efforts are underway.
“We are pleased that all councils in the province are assisting us in rehabilitating roads within our district ahead of the Independence Day celebrations next month,” stated Matsenhura. “We identified the Murambinda-Birchenough Road as a priority due to its poor condition, and resources, including road maintenance equipment like graders, have been allocated to facilitate the rehabilitation process.”

Zanu PF Buhera South legislator Ngonidzashe Mudekunye also confirmed preparations for President Mnangagwa’s attendance at the event.
The Independence Day torch will follow a symbolic route passing through the Butcher area in Rusape, where many Zimbabweans suffered torture and loss of life during the liberation struggle. It will then proceed to Dzapasi Assembly Point before culminating at Murambinda B Secondary School, the chosen venue for the celebrations.
In another story, Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona has announced that the 40 roads currently undergoing rehabilitation in Harare are expected to be fully operational within the next three weeks.
