Contemporary artist Kudakwashe Gombarume, popularly known as Chillmaster, is set to appear in court today on charges of culpable homicide following a deadly car crash that occurred earlier this month.
The 24-year-old musician was reportedly involved in a traffic collision along New Chitungwiza Road that resulted in the death of 50-year-old pedestrian Custon Charambira, who died instantly at the scene.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the case, stating that Chillmaster is facing charges related to culpable homicide.
“The musician was driving with three passengers, heading from Stoneridge toward the city, when he struck a pedestrian who was walking along the roadside in the same direction. The victim died on the spot after sustaining severe head injuries and broken legs,” said Inspector Chakanza.
Charambira was later laid to rest in his rural home in Zaka, Masvingo Province.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Chillmaster issued a heartfelt statement on his social media platforms, expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to the deceased’s family.
“It is with immense grief and a heavy heart that I share this devastating news,” he wrote. “Earlier today, I was involved in a tragic accident that claimed a life. I am overwhelmed with sadness and remorse.”
He added that he is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation and requested privacy for both the victim’s family and himself during this difficult period.
“There are no words that can make up for the pain caused. I take full responsibility for what happened and will carry the burden of this tragedy forever,” Chillmaster said.
He further stated that he would not be making any additional public statements in light of the legal proceedings, and thanked his supporters for their understanding as he steps away from public life to focus on accountability and healing.
