Zimbabwe’s first mobile telecommunications operator, NetOne, is celebrating 30 years of service, reflecting on three decades of expanding connectivity and supporting the country’s digital transformation journey.
Since its launch in 1996, at a time when mobile communication was still a novelty for many Zimbabweans, NetOne has grown into a major force in the nation’s telecommunications sector. Over the years, the company has played a significant role in making communication more accessible and advancing digital inclusion across the country.
The evolution of NetOne has mirrored Zimbabwe’s technological progress. Mobile phones, once viewed as luxury items, have become essential tools for daily life, enabling access to education, business opportunities, financial services, healthcare information, and social connections. NetOne has been at the centre of this shift, helping bridge communication gaps and bringing digital services closer to communities.
Led by Group Chief Executive Officer Engineer Raphael Mushanawani, the company has expanded its focus beyond traditional voice and data services to support broader national development goals. Its strategic direction aligns with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 agenda and other government initiatives aimed at fostering economic growth through technology and innovation.
Through continued investment in network infrastructure, including the rollout of 4G LTE and 5G technologies, NetOne has strengthened connectivity in both urban and rural areas. The company says these advancements are helping create new opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, commerce, healthcare, education, and financial services.
As it enters its fourth decade of operation, NetOne says it remains committed to extending digital access, empowering communities, and supporting Zimbabwe’s transition into a fully digital economy.
According to the company, while its first 30 years focused on connecting Zimbabweans, the next chapter will be centred on enabling citizens and businesses to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
