Neurologist ‘Lennon Tonderai Gwaunza’ accused of extorting colleague over credentials
HARARE — On Wednesday, a specialised neurologist was accused of breaking the Data Protection Act by threatening to blackmail an internal medicine and clinical neurology colleague.
Judge Apollonia Marutya saw 40-year-old Lennon Tonderai Gwaunza, freed him on a $100 bond, and scheduled his trial for January 22.
Gwaunza was told not to obstruct witnesses or publish any information on Andrew Mataruse, the complainant.
The prosecution claims that on February 13, Gwaunza wrote an email to a number of employees of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe asserting that Mataruse lacked clinical training as a neurologist. He further declared that Tawanda Mushawarima, a different neurologist, did not require Mataruse’s supervision and that he would not be supervising her.
The email, which was also sent to Mataruse, read in part: “I will not be involved in that circus.”
The prosecution said Gwaunza’s intention was to intimidate and harass Mataruse and prevent him from performing clinical neurology duties at his surgery in Milton Park, Harare.
