Nigeria’s Afcon 2023 Squad Faces Late Withdrawal

Nigeria's Afcon 2023 Squad Faces Late Withdrawal

Nigeria’s forward, Victor Boniface, is set to miss the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations – 2023 Afcon – due to a groin injury sustained during a training session with his Bundesliga club, Bayer Leverkusen. The 23-year-old faces a minimum of six weeks on the sidelines, ruling him out of the continental tournament.

In light of this setback, Nice striker Terem Moffi has received a call-up as a replacement for Boniface. However, the final decision is pending approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and an agreement with Moffi’s French Ligue 1 club.

Unfortunately, Boniface joins the ranks of other Nigerian players forced to skip Afcon 2023 due to injuries, including Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi and Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi. Ndidi’s teammate, Kelechi Iheanacho, is also nursing an injury, but there is optimism that he will recover in time for the tournament.

This latest development adds to the challenges faced by Nigeria’s national team as they prepare for the Afcon, dealing with the absence of key players. The competition is scheduled to commence on January 13, extending until February 11.
