Nine Zimbabwean nationals have been remanded in custody in Botswana after being charged with the murder of fellow countryman Tavonanashe Mariga.
The gruesome incident, which allegedly occurred on January 5, 2025, at Matebele Farms, has sent shockwaves through the region.
The accused—Crispen Gasura, Desmond Dube, Takesure Fraser, Abbisai Gasura, Justice Mafukidzi, Clayton Chiwa, Spencer Gasura, Calvin Mafukidze, and Alouis Gasura—are all farm workers. Authorities claim they brutally assaulted Mariga, accusing him of stealing P1,500. Reports indicate that they stomped on his testicles until he lost consciousness, leading to his death.
The nine suspects appeared before the Broadhurst Magistrate Court, where they were remanded in custody pending further investigations. The state opposed bail, citing the need for:
- Post-mortem results to determine the exact cause of death
- Forensic evidence to strengthen the case
- Further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing
Authorities revealed that video footage of the brutal assault exists, further implicating the accused.
The suspects face charges of murder and illegal entry into Botswana. The case has sparked widespread attention, raising concerns about crime, violence, and the treatment of undocumented individuals in the country.
As the investigation continues, the accused will remain in custody, with their next court appearance expected in the coming weeks.
The shocking nature of the crime has ignited discussions about law enforcement, justice, and migrant workers’ rights in Botswana. Authorities have urged the public to allow due process to take its course as the legal system addresses the matter.
