Tragedy struck on Thursday when a school kombi transporting students from Nyangani High School crashed along the Mutare-Juliasdale Road, near the 62-kilometre mark. The crash resulted in one fatality and left 15 others injured.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the vehicle, a Toyota Hiace Kombi owned by the school, was carrying 19 passengers when it lost control, swerved off the road, and overturned. The police confirmed the incident:
“A fatal road traffic accident involving students from Nyangani High School occurred on 7th November 2024 at the 62-kilometre peg along the Mutare-Juliasdale Road. One student was killed, and fifteen others were injured when the kombi, with 19 passengers aboard, veered off the road and overturned.”
The body of the deceased has been taken to Bonda Mission Hospital for post-mortem, while the injured students are receiving treatment at both Bonda Mission and Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.
Reports, though unconfirmed, suggest that the students were on their way back from an event marking Africa Youth Day and the Youth Empowerment Forum, held at the Magamba Training Centre in Mutasa South. The event was attended by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is said to have led the crowd in chanting ZANU PF slogans before delivering his speech, with some students reportedly participating in the chants.
