Over 100 Prisoners Escape Nigerian Jail Amid Heavy Rain Damage
More than a hundred prisoners managed to escape from a jail close to Nigeria’s capital following heavy rainfall that caused damage to a section of the facility where they were being held.
Officials reported that initially, 118 inmates fled from Suleja Prison, but 10 of them have been recaptured since then. A manhunt is underway to locate the remaining escapees.
At present, the identities of these prisoners remain unknown, raising concerns that some of them could pose a danger to the public.
However, a statement released by the prison assured that they are collaborating with other security agencies to address the situation. They urged the public to continue their daily routines without any apprehension or fear.
“In conjunction with sister security agencies [we] have so far recaptured 10 fleeing inmates and taken them into custody, while we are in hot chase to recapture the rest,” said a statement from Abuja’s prison authority.
It was noted that numerous prison facilities in Suleja, located approximately 50km (30 miles) from Abuja, were constructed during the colonial era and have consequently aged and weakened over time.
The heavy rainfall experienced on Wednesday marked the onset of the rainy season following a recent period of intense heat.
Nigeria’s meteorological agency recently issued a warning about the likelihood of heavy rains and flooding in certain states.
Two years ago, over 400 prisoners escaped during an attack on another prison in Abuja.
Officials reported that during the raid, four inmates, a security guard, and several assailants were killed.
The attack was claimed by Islamist fighters who stated that their goal was to free some of their members.
Since 2020, more than 5,000 inmates have escaped during prison breaks in Nigeria.

Many of Nigeria’s prisons are overcrowded and lack essential amenities, although authorities claim they are working to address these issues.
A significant number of inmates have not been convicted of any crimes and can spend years awaiting the start of their trials. According to recent reports, up to 70% of inmates in one prison are awaiting trial.
