Parirenyatwa Hospital Nears Completion of Major Refurbishment

Zimbabwe’s largest referral facility, the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, is nearing the final stages of a major refurbishment project designed to restore its capacity to deliver world-class healthcare.

The extensive upgrades, part of the government’s Presidential Hospital Refurbishment Programme, are being spearheaded by Prevail International Group, which has overseen both the design and execution of the infrastructural overhaul.

The project is addressing long-standing systemic challenges, including deteriorating infrastructure, unreliable utilities, and outdated medical equipment. Significant improvements already completed include the installation of a 100 kW solar power unit with advanced battery storage, the drilling of eight solar-powered boreholes to guarantee water security, and the modernization of both clinical and residential facilities.

Among the key milestones is the full rehabilitation of the Adlum Hostel, which houses student nurses. The hostel has been upgraded with new electrical systems, plumbing, tiling, and finishes. On the medical front, the hospital now boasts a 21-bed renal dialysis unit and a dedicated paediatric operating theatre, developments expected to greatly enhance patient care while improving working conditions for healthcare professionals.

Health and Child Care Minister Dr. Douglas Mombeshora reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Parirenyatwa into a facility that meets international standards. He highlighted the installation of new diagnostic equipment, including CT scanners and digital X-ray machines, as part of the phased approach to minimize disruption to hospital services.

The refurbishment is widely regarded as a critical step in rebuilding Zimbabwe’s public health system. It also underscores the importance of collaboration between government and the private sector, with Prevail International providing technical expertise and project management to ensure efficiency and quality delivery.

The revamped hospital is expected to be officially handed over by September 1, marking a new era for Zimbabwe’s healthcare sector.
