Mutare, Zimbabwe – A concerted effort by police in Manicaland targeting the smuggling of goods through illegal entry points is proving effective, with recent operations leading to the seizure of contraband.
Last week, an anti-smuggling task force encountered three individuals attempting to smuggle second-hand clothes, who subsequently abandoned their bales and fled back into Mozambique to evade arrest.
Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident. “On July 11, 2025, around 7 AM, a border enforcement team comprising three ZRP Support Unit and two Zimbabwe National Army members was on patrol along an illegal entry point in Mutare when they intercepted three male adults carrying three bales of second-hand goods on their heads,” Assistant Inspector Chinyoka stated.
He further elaborated, “Upon noticing the patrol team, the three male adults dropped their bales and ran back into Mozambique. The patrol team made an effort to arrest the suspects but to no avail. The bales were seized and handed to ZIMRA Mutare for further management.”
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka affirmed that the police are diligently working to curb illegal activities along the border, underscoring their commitment to maintaining law and order and protecting the country’s economic interests. The ongoing operations highlight the intensified efforts by law enforcement to combat cross-border crime and ensure compliance with customs regulations.
