Police Officers Nabbed for Bribery at Mbare Police Station
Two female police officers stationed at Mbare Police Station in Harare found themselves in legal trouble after being apprehended for allegedly soliciting bribes from motorists seeking the release of their impounded vehicles.
Victoria Shoriwa, aged 36, and Naume Dube, aged 31, were arraigned before Harare magistrate Stanford Mambanje on charges of criminal abuse of office. They were subsequently remanded out of custody until April 4, awaiting further legal proceedings. The magistrate granted them bail set at US$100 each.
According to the state prosecutor, Lancelot Mutsokoti, the incident unfolded on March 11 this year around 11:45 AM when detectives acted on a tip-off and visited Mbare Police Station. The detectives had received information suggesting that the two police officers were involved in soliciting bribes from motorists whose vehicles had been impounded.
Allegations against Shoriwa and Dube indicate a pattern of demanding bribes from individuals in exchange for the release of impounded vehicles. The detectives caught them red-handed engaging in this illicit activity.
During the apprehension, it is reported that Dube attempted to destroy paperwork containing the number plates of the vehicles awaiting release, presumably after their owners had paid bribes. Upon searching Dube, authorities discovered US$120 in her possession.
