Police Warn Teachers: No Abuse or Charging for Extra Lessons

Stephen Mutamba

Deputy Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba issued a stern warning to teachers, cautioning against mistreating students and requesting payments from parents for additional lessons, deeming such actions unlawful.

Speaking at the 16th edition of the Commissioner General of Police’s Schools Merit Awards in Harare, Mutamba emphasized the police force’s commitment to preventing such misconduct, particularly within ZRP schools.

He criticized teachers who pressure parents for extra fees, emphasizing that the Ministry of Education has unequivocally deemed such practices illegal. Mutamba also condemned instances where teachers neglect their duties during regular school hours only to focus on remedial lessons, urging those uncomfortable with classroom teaching to seek redeployment.

Highlighting a recent disturbing incident of child abuse within schools, Mutamba emphasized the grave betrayal of trust inherent in such actions, reminding teachers of their duty to protect and nurture the children entrusted to their care.
