Mohamed Salah’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) campaign may come to an abrupt end following a recent update on his muscle injury. Salah sustained the injury during the first half of the 2-2 draw with Ghana last Thursday and was substituted off before undergoing a subsequent scan.
Initially, the Egyptian Football Association (FA) stated that Salah would only miss two games – the final Group B fixture against Cape Verde and the subsequent Round of 16 match. However, Liverpool, Salah’s club, has released a statement revealing that the injury is more severe than initially anticipated.

The statement reads: “Mohamed Salah will return to the AXA Training Centre on Wednesday to commence an intensive rehabilitation program with Liverpool’s medical team for the muscle injury sustained with Egypt last week. The injury, more severe than first feared, led to the forward leaving the field during the Africa Cup of Nations fixture against Ghana.”
An agreement has been reached with the Egyptian FA for Salah to undergo treatment in Liverpool. The statement continues, “Salah will immediately begin working with the club’s medical staff upon his return to Merseyside, aiming to get back in action as soon as possible for both club and country.
This provides him with the best chance to return to competition in Afcon if Egypt, who secured qualification for the knockout stage with a 2-2 draw against Cape Verde tonight, continue to progress in the tournament.”
