President Emmerson Mnangagwa will not be attending this year’s United Nations General Assembly in New York, according to an announcement from his spokesperson.
On Friday, September 20, George Charamba, Deputy Chief Secretary for Presidential Communications, stated that Foreign Affairs Minister Frederick Shava will represent Mnangagwa and deliver his statement at the event.
Charamba explained that Mnangagwa has a demanding schedule in the final months of 2024, preventing him from traveling to the U.S. Shava, who is already in New York, will take on the responsibility.
Additionally, reports from ZimLive suggest that there is concern among Mnangagwa’s close associates following a recent helicopter crash. The military helicopter, intended to transport the President from Masvingo to Harare, crashed on Sunday, leading to speculation that this incident influenced his decision to skip the UN gathering.
