Prison Officer Arrested for Assisting Inmate’s Bold Escape and Shootout

A prison guard has been arrested for allegedly providing an inmate with a firearm, which the inmate then used to escape custody on March 21.

The inmate, Luke Zinyengere, 29, was involved in a shootout with prison officers at the Harare Magistrates Court before hijacking a Mazda Demio to make his getaway.

Prison officer Donald Madzinga is expected to face charges in court on Monday for aiding the inmate’s escape, according to law enforcement sources.

Zinyengere had been awaiting sentencing for an armed robbery at Quest Financial Services in Harare on February 25, 2024, during which over US$700,000 in cash was stolen.

Zinyengere was one of several suspects arrested in connection with the robbery, including two security guards who were sentenced to 48 months in prison each for picking up some of the stolen money as the robbers fled and failing to turn it over as evidence.
