Serious accusations have been made against a self-described spiritual healer for allegedly sexually abusing a 19-year-old patient at her parents’ Kariba home.
The crime is said to have been perpetrated by the accused, prophet Kudakwashe Gwembe, 43, of Msasa, Harare, during a purported spiritual healing session at the victim’s family house in the resort town.
Gwembe was charged with r_pe when he appeared before Kariba Magistrate Rumbidzai Tshuma, which brought the event to light. With the recommendation to request release from the High Court, he has been placed under detention in jail until November 17. After that, Gwembe will submit a report to the regional magistrate of Karoi.
The prosecution, headed by Carren Modina Musiiwa, claims that on October 23 and 24, in the Nyamhunga neighbourhood of Kariba, the accused r@ped the complainant while pretending to drive away bad spirits. Unsettlingly, Gwembe threatened the victim after the crimes occurred, saying he could bring back the demons that had previously plagued her, resulting in seizures and other ailments.
Fearing for her life, the victim kept the upsetting events to herself for many days before telling her family. Her family then called the police right away, and on October 31st, Gwembe was taken into custody.
