Rangpur Riders defeated Comilla Victorians by 34 runs at Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, giving Zimbabwean all-rounder Sikandar Raza a winning start in the Bangladesh Premier League.
The Chevrons’ mainstay scored 12 runs off 10 deliveries as the Riders batted first, finishing with a total of 176-5 in 20 overs. Raza concluded with bowling stats of 2/23 in four overs as they knocked out their opponents for 142 runs in 19.1 overs.
Coming in to bat at number four, Raza’s innings consisted of one six and he went on to pick up the wickets of Victorians’ top order batsmen, Saikat Ali for 12 runs and Dawid Malan for 17 runs.
Some of the match winning performances from Rangpur Riders came from Rony Talukdar who top scored with 67 runs off 31 deliveries and former Pakistan international Shoaib Malik who chipped in with 33 runs from 26 balls.
Hasan Mahmud ended with the best bowling performance for the Riders, taking three wickets and allowing 20 overs in 3.1 overs. Robiul Haque grabbed two wickets and allowed 33 runs in four overs.
Raza will miss the Chevrons’ T20I series against Ireland, which begins on Thursday at Harare Sports Club, after ZC gave him permission to play franchise cricket in Bangladesh.
Raza had an incredible finish to 2022, winning trophy after award, including the International Cricket Council Men’s Player of the Month for August, being the first Zimbabwean to do so. The award was given to the excellent all-rounder after he hit three century against Bangladesh and India.
Raza was recently shortlisted for three key ICC categories, including the coveted Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, which honors the overall top performing men’s player, Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year, and Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year. The ICC website is now up for voting.
Next up for Raza and his Riders is a battle against the Fortune Barishal squad, headed by Shakib Al Hasan, who lost their first match of the tournament by six wickets against Sylhet Strikers (who signed Ryan Burl).
The game is also set for later today at the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
