The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, has written to opposition leader Venancio Mondlane requesting a meeting on November 26, following widespread protests in the country rejecting the recent election results.
These protests have been fueled by video evidence showing that supporters of Zimbabwe’s ruling party, ZANU-PF, were allegedly transported to Mozambique and given Mozambican identification cards to vote in the election. Undercover footage from The Masvingo Mirror newspaper revealed ZANU-PF supporters receiving the IDs and casting their votes in the election.
Although Mozambique’s ruling party, FRELIMO, and its presidential candidate Daniel Chapo were declared winners, the final election outcome has not yet been confirmed as the matter is now in court.
Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane has promised to continue fighting for justice, while RENAMO, another opposition group, has called for the establishment of a transitional government to oversee new elections. Rumors within diplomatic circles suggest that FRELIMO is considering discussions about forming a Government of National Unity.
