Robert Mugabe Jnr Granted Bail Over Drug Possession Charges

Harare, Zimbabwe – Robert Mugabe Jnr, the son of Zimbabwe’s late former President Robert Mugabe, has been granted US$300 bail by Harare provincial magistrate Mrs Lisa Mutendereki after prosecutors conceded there were no compelling reasons to keep him in custody.

Mugabe, 33, is facing charges of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs following his arrest earlier this week.

As part of his bail conditions, the court ordered him to report to the police every Friday, reside at his stated address, and refrain from interfering with State witnesses.

During the bail hearing, his lawyer Mr Ashiel Mugiya argued that Mugabe was not a flight risk, saying he was a suitable candidate for release.

According to court records, the incident occurred on October 1, 2025, at around 8:30am, when police officers carrying out a traffic blitz along Second Street Extension in Harare stopped Mugabe. He had been driving a silver Honda Fit (registration number AGY 5850) against one-way traffic.

A search of his sling bag allegedly led to the discovery of two sachets of cannabis, a pack of rolling papers, and a white cannabis crusher. He was immediately taken into custody.

Prosecutors told the court that the recovered cannabis weighed 72 grams and was valued at US$30.

This is not the first time Mugabe Jnr has had a brush with the law. In 2023, he was arrested over allegations of damaging property and assaulting a police officer during a party in Harare, though the matter was later resolved through an out-of-court settlement.

Robert Mugabe Snr, who died in 2019 at the age of 95, led Zimbabwe for nearly four decades before being forced to resign in 2017.
