Sabi Star Mine, located in Buhera, has recently completed the construction and equipping of the Mukubu Community Clinic, along with the procurement of essential medical equipment. This initiative aims to enhance access to primary healthcare services for neighboring communities.
The newly established clinic, now managed by the Buhera Rural District Council (RDC), features modern facilities, including a well-stocked pharmacy. Engineer Oswald Makonese, the manager of Sabi Star Mine, stated that the total investment in constructing and furnishing the clinic amounts to approximately US$220,000.
“We are dedicated to the welfare of the community in which we operate, and we believe that this health facility will significantly benefit the local residents,” Engineer Makonese emphasized.
The construction of the Mukubu Community Clinic began two years ago as a grassroots initiative by the local community. Sabi Star Mine subsequently stepped in to provide support and complete the project.
James Mhlanga, the Ward 12 councillor, expressed gratitude to the mine for its pivotal role in funding the clinic’s completion. “The generous support from the mine has been instrumental in overcoming the financial obstacles we faced in finalizing the clinic,” Mhlanga remarked.
Emilia Chibvongodze, the CEO of Buhera RDC, highlighted the importance of the clinic’s establishment in improving healthcare accessibility. “The provision of clinic equipment will significantly enhance healthcare service delivery, aligning with the National Development Strategy 1 goal of ensuring universal access to healthcare by 2030,” Chibvongodze noted.
In rural areas like Buhera, accessing primary healthcare services often requires traveling long distances. Additionally, medication shortages are a common challenge, particularly in remote regions of Zimbabwe.
Sabi Star Mine’s community-centric initiatives have earned recognition, including the Excellence in Community Empowerment and Social Leadership Award at the 2023 Zimbabwe National ESG and CSR Awards. The company’s efforts extend beyond healthcare infrastructure, encompassing projects such as community gardens and borehole drilling, all aimed at uplifting local communities.
