The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is designed for high-achieving international students who aspire to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in the United States and are committed to fostering positive civic and social change. This scholarship aims to support students who plan to return to their home countries to enhance under-resourced and underserved communities.

Two full scholarships and up to eight partial scholarships are available.
Target Group:
The scholarships are intended for international students who are not U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or dual citizens of the U.S. and another country.
Scholarship Value/Inclusions/Duration:
The AU EGL scholarship covers all billable expenses at American University, including full tuition, room, and board. However, it does not cover non-billable expenses such as mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets, and miscellaneous costs (approximately $4,000). Partial scholarships may be awarded, valued at up to $40,000 per year. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study, contingent upon satisfactory academic performance.

Eligibility Criteria:
Preference will be given to:
- International students who have faced and overcome various challenges, particularly those from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.
- Applicants with a minimum GPA of 3.8 (or in the top 10% of their graduating class) for grades 9-12.
- Individuals demonstrating a commitment to leadership, community service, and addressing the needs of their home country.
- Students who meet one of the following English language proficiency requirements:
- 95+ TOEFL iBT (with all subscores at 20 or above)
- Sub-scores of 24+ on the paper-based TOEFL (taken after May 31, 2017)
- 7.0+ IELTS (with all subscores at 6.0 or above)
- 33 minimum SAT Reading subscore
- 29 minimum ACT English score
- 65 minimum PTE
- 125+ Duolingo (with all subscores at 115 or above)
- Cambridge Assessment English score of 185 or higher (with all subscores at 169 or higher)
- Students who are currently enrolled in secondary/high school and plan to graduate by June 2025. Those in the IB program should aim to graduate with a full IB diploma, including at least three higher-level subjects. Students in the British A-Levels system must complete at least three A levels and finish 13 years of schooling by August 2025.
Ineligibility Criteria:
You are not eligible to apply if you:
- Are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or dual citizen of the U.S. and another country.
- Are enrolled in or have already started post-secondary studies at another university in your home country or the United States.
- Graduated from secondary school before 2023.
Application Instructions:
To apply for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship, you must complete the AU EGLS application along with the Common or Coalition Application and the international admissions process by December 1, 2024. AU EGLS applicants must apply under Regular Decision for fall 2025 (not Early Decision or Early Action).
