Despite heavy investment in new players, Northern Region champions Scottland FC delivered a disappointing performance at the Champion of Champions tournament, raising questions about the effectiveness of their current strategy.
Tipped as favorites to dominate the competition, Scottland FC finished at the bottom of the standings. They lost 5-3 on penalties to ZPC Hwange in their opening match and were outplayed in the third-place playoff by Kwekwe United, suffering a 3-1 defeat.
The team’s underwhelming showing has prompted reflection within the club. Secretary-General Fortune Bgwoni admitted that the results were a stark reality check, emphasizing the need for a more strategic approach to squad building if the team is to compete in the Premier League.
“This was an eye-opener for our team. It has shown us that to compete in the Premier League, we need to boost our team,” Bgwoni said. He also revealed that the club has identified targets for the next season and is set to begin negotiations with prospective players.

Although Bgwoni remained tight-lipped about the names on their wishlist, the club unveiled CAPS United midfielder Kingsley Mureremba as their newest signing yesterday. Reports suggest that Scottland FC is pursuing several high-profile players, including Walter Musona, Khama Billiat, Godfrey Makaruse, Marvelous Chigumira, McKinnon Mushore, and Talbert Shumba.
The poor tournament performance has also cast doubt on the future of head coach Genesis Mangombe. Speculation is mounting that Tonderayi Ndiraya, who is expected to part ways with Simba Bhora at the end of the year, could take over the reins at Scottland FC.
Meanwhile, Joel Luphahla, Dynamos’ assistant coach and recent Chibuku Super Cup winner, is reportedly in line to replace Ndiraya at Simba Bhora. Luphahla has prior experience as head coach at TelOne and assistant coach at Highlanders.
Scottland FC’s experience at the tournament underscores the challenges of relying solely on financial investment to build a winning team. The failure to integrate a coherent strategy or address tactical shortcomings appears to have been a critical factor in their underperformance.
As the team looks ahead to the Premier League, Scottland FC will need to balance their spending with a focus on strategic squad building, ensuring that their investments translate into results on the pitch.
Whether a change in leadership will catalyze the necessary transformation remains to be seen.
