Police Baffled by Security Breaches at Deputy Finance Minister David Mnangagwa’s Home

Harare, Zimbabwe | Authorities are perplexed by two recent security breaches at the Borrowdale residence of David Kudakwashe Mnangagwa, son of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and deputy finance minister.

The latest incident occurred on June 25 when an intruder, dubbed the “ghost raider” by police, left six cartridges at the property on Camel Road. Three were found outside Mnangagwa’s main bedroom door, and three on the lawn of the double-story house, which is guarded by two police officers.

The first breach took place on June 23 around 10 PM. Mnangagwa, who was watching TV with his wife, alerted the police officers after hearing unusual noises from the ceiling. The officers inspected the house and its perimeter but found nothing suspicious.

Mnangagwa called the officers again around 11:50 PM, asking them to check the roof. Officers discovered a bag containing some of Mnangagwa’s possessions, including torn documents, two Apple MacBook laptops, and a MacBook iPad, all appearing deliberately damaged. Mnangagwa reported that the items had been taken from his bedroom. He also noted that his 9mm Beretta pistol with 15 live cartridges and US$500 cash were missing.

In a strange turn, the intruder retrieved a loaf of bread from the kitchen and left it on the floor near the door. The intruder also cut the driver’s headrest in Mnangagwa’s parked Land Rover Defender.

Despite a thorough search by police, including a canine unit, on June 24, no trace of the suspect or evidence of forced entry was found.

Then, just after 7:30 AM on June 26, Mnangagwa’s eight-year-old son discovered a live cartridge on the floor outside his parents’ bedroom door. Police were called, and investigators found three cartridges within two meters of the door and another three on the lawn.

“Police are certain that the live cartridges inside the house were definitely not there when they attended the first incident,” a source said. “The two incidents have left police thinking they are chasing a ghost raider. How is it possible to enter a house guarded by armed officers twice and then vanish into thin air?”

Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi initially said he was busy and later did not respond to calls.

David Mnangagwa, 35, was appointed deputy finance minister by his father in September last year, a move that drew nepotism criticism.
