Shandirwa’s Heroic Header Secures Dynamos Crucial 1-0 Win Over Zesco United in CAF Confederation Cup

Chibuku Super Cup holders Dynamos secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia’s Zesco United in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round clash at Botswana National Stadium yesterday.

Despite playing at a neutral venue, Dynamos displayed resilience, taking an important step forward in their continental campaign.

The return leg is set for Zambia this coming weekend, where Dynamos will aim to defend their slender lead.

Midfielder Tanaka Shandirwa delivered the decisive moment of the match, heading home the only goal in the 30th minute. His effort marked a rare win for Dynamos in a season characterized by frequent draws and made his debut in CAF inter-club football a memorable one.

This was also the first victory for interim coach Lloyd “Mablanyo” Chigowe, who recently took over from Genesis Mangombe. Chigowe’s tenure began with a goalless draw against Simba Bhora last week, but Shandirwa’s goal ensured the coach’s maiden win came in a crucial continental fixture.

Shandirwa, who became the first Dynamos player to score under Chigowe’s leadership, expressed his delight after the match. “I’m happy for the team, and this win means a lot to us as we aim to make an impact in this competition,” Shandirwa told Zimpapers Sports Hub.

He acknowledged the hard work the team had put in and praised the importance of Dynamos’ return to continental football. “I’m grateful to God for allowing me to be part of this great team. Scoring the crucial goal means a lot to me and to everyone who has supported me throughout my career. These are the moments we dream of as players, and I’m honored to have delivered today.”

Shandirwa also reflected on his growing sense of belonging at Dynamos, emphasizing his desire to contribute more to the team’s success. “I will cherish this moment for a long time. I’ve never felt this good since I joined Dynamos, and I’m eager to do more for this team.”

As the second leg in Zambia approaches, Dynamos will be looking to build on this positive result and advance to the next stage of the competition.
