Sir Wicknell Denies “Vote-Buying” Allegations in ZIFA Support

Businessman Wicknell Chivayo, also known as Sir Wicknell, has dismissed allegations that his support for the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) under Nqobile Magwizi is intended as “vote-buying” or in violation of FIFA regulations. In a statement on his X page, Sir Wicknell described the accusations as “baseless, misleading, and completely unfounded.”

The controversy stems from claims circulating on social media, suggesting that Sir Wicknell’s public pledge of support to ZIFA could influence elections within the football body and violate the FIFA Code of Ethics. Sir Wicknell firmly rejected these assertions, emphasizing that his involvement is motivated by a genuine desire to support the development of football in Zimbabwe, rather than to sway votes.

“My goal is to help Zimbabwean football grow, not to manipulate elections,” he stated. “I am not bound by FIFA’s rules because I am not an official or a member of the ZIFA board. My commitment to the sport is about helping it thrive.”

He also refuted accusations of political interference, specifically those linking his support to Zimbabwe’s ruling party, ZANU PF. Sir Wicknell rejected these claims as “absurd” and “untrue,” asserting that his business and charitable activities are independent and solely funded by his personal and corporate resources.

Despite his affiliation with ZANU PF, Sir Wicknell emphasized that his philanthropic and business efforts are conducted separately from any political agenda. He also expressed strong support for Magwizi, praising his qualifications, integrity, and passion for the sport, and called him the right leader to move ZIFA forward.

In closing, Sir Wicknell expressed confidence that the allegations would be quickly dismissed if they were submitted to FIFA.
