Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have arrested social media personality Josephine Mutongi in connection with the tragic incident in Kuwadzana Extension, Harare, citing allegations of fraud related to funeral contributions.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest to ZiMetro News, stating that Mutongi is facing several charges, including fraud and inciting public demonstrations.
The arrest stems from Mutongi’s alleged failure to account for more than US$1,000 deposited into her personal account, funds which were intended as community contributions following the discovery of three deceased children.
“She failed to surrender part of the funeral contributions deposited into her personal account,” Commissioner Nyathi stated.
Address Dispute and Missing Children
In addition to the financial allegations, there are unconfirmed reports suggesting Mutongi had a separate clash with a Kuwadzana Extension family over the use of their address. It is claimed the family was shocked to find Mutongi had provided their address to authorities, allegedly to evade arrest.
The tragic incident that led to the public fundraising efforts occurred on October 3, 2025, when three young children were discovered dead in the boot of a derelict Mercedes-Benz. The car was parked near their homes in Kuwadzana Extension.
The children, who had been reported missing two days earlier, were identified as:
- Anenyasha Muzanago, aged 1 year and 10 months.
- Reynold Matsiwe, aged 2.
- Anopaishe Muzanago, aged 4.
Mutongi remains in police custody as investigations into the financial misconduct and other charges continue.
